One of my favorite quotes of all time is from William Edwards Deming, a statistician and all around smart guy, who said, “It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory.”
While I don’t think that holding onto the same old ways of doing things in a tasting room is necessarily going to lead to destruction, I do think that it holds companies in place and keeps wineries and other businesses from becoming as successful as they could be.
What’s happening in your winery that you want or need to change? Make a list of the things that you aren’t happy with and consider options for change. If these changes involve your staff, remember that changing people is nigh impossible. So change your processes and procedures. Rewrite the way you ask them to do things, a new procedure will help them to modify their behavior. And may give you new ways to see how the task or interaction can be different.
A tip of the glass from me to you!
